District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray on Thursday announced that public and private health insurance plans that the D.C. government regulates — including Medicaid, D.C. government employee insurance, and private plans sold on D.C.’s health exchange — will be required to cover transition-related care.
I’ve been medically transitioning for a little over a month now. So far, my insurance has covered most of it- save for the actual testosterone. That was manageable ($40 for 4 doses that will last me about a month and a half). But things like top surgery can be anywhere from about $7,000 to $12,000 or upwards. I’m not really thinking about top surgery right now… I’m more just focused on seeing things changes to my facial structure and voice. Regardless, knowing that a place like D.C. could make my insurance cover all of this is amazing. It’s wonderful that the mayor recognized how big of an issue this was for the city’s residents and made a change! Happy for all trans* people in D.C. today!
I am slowly learning to love my soul - how I tell myself to be gentle to others, not to judge. I have stopped putting myself down and being ashamed for the things I do. When I tell someone that they deserve better than me, it’s not out of self-hatred anymore; I just know that they could find someone who loves them more. I have started smiling at strangers and finding something beautiful in every person that I meet.
In a world that is so hard, I am constantly astounded by the ways that I am teaching myself to be soft.
